What do you think makes a car a modern classic?

Recommended Posts

What makes a car a classic? Lots of things can enter a car into classic status, some more than others. Things like how rare it is, how popular or even unpopular it was, style, power etc.  Thing is, some of the things that should or would make a car a classic don't necessarily mean it is! What do you think makes a car a modern classic? From the new cars that are being produced now, do you think we may have seen the last modern classic cars already?

It seems there is no hard and fast criteria.....some say cars must be over 40 years old ( the cars that qualify for nil rated taxation) whilst the majority of enthusiasts class their own 15/20 year old cars as classic, rarity and desirability appears to be the governing criteria ?

Interesting cars that aren't being built anymore are the new modern classics in my opinion  e.g. early Golf GTi's,  MGB GT, Ford Escort's, Nissan 240 Z etc. (the list is endless).

Question :  are older diesel powered cars considered classic ?    I dislike derv cars therefore they'll never make it onto my radar.

I quite fancy a focus ST. We had a 2001 focus Zetec estate (brand new) and it was a brilliant car to drive. Cornering was superb, and it really was hard to get it out of line while cornering.

My wife's daily is a 2008 focus tdci and it's also a cracking car to drive.

I've yet to find a cheap low miles ST though, so not sure where that site is finding them so cheap!

Skyline is just so look sexy! ?

Snap Dave......I too would fancy a well sorted Focus ST......the Zetec models (lower stiffer suspension setup) handle like a dream.....come to think of it.....all Fords handle very well now a days.

I used to drive an 07 Focus Zetec TDCI (non DPF engine)......it handled exceptionally well in comparison to the VW Golf SE  I replaced it with.

It's probably a unfair comparison because the Golf SE was the comfort model.

I really miss Ford's heated front screen and the handling that invited keen drivers to push that bit harder.

Exactly mate! Ford were onto a winner with the Focus when the decided to go with the multilink rear suspension, something that very nearly didn't happen! There's a great article in modern classics magazine on the focus with the chap who helped design it. The multilink cost an extra £50 per car, and Ford were worried about making a potential loss so very nearly dismissed the idea! So glad they didn't! Might write up a shorter version of that article as it's a great read about a great car.
